So let’s learn from Queen Esther. Of course, it will be safe to assume we all know the story; but then, there is an important lesson we need to learn from there.
The king had announced that all beautiful virgins in the land who are interested in being a queen be gathered in a citadel of Susa for some months to be groomed and trimmed by the King’s Eunuch. All the ladies present at the citadel got carried away by the independence and splendour royalty had to offer them, only God knows the background of each of them, they got to the palace and took matters into their own hands. But not Esther. Although I don’t know what Esther saw, the reason she submitted to the king's Eunuch, there is a lesson we all can learn from this.
Hegai was the eunuch in charge of the king’s harem, a harem filled with women of different shapes, sizes and colors, Hegai knew the king, he knew why the king chose Vashti, the dethroned queen, he knew what the king wanted in a woman, he knew the king’s particular tastes, this was the main thing that qualified him to groom these virgins. I want to believe that Esther was not the most beautiful one in the citadel, in fact, she might have been with some ‘buts’ for all we care, maybe small boobs, flat ass, tiny legs, chubby arms, something that should have made the king say no to her, but she was picked anyway, why? We may say it was because she was favoured, yes, that is totally correct, but Esther did something none of the girls did, she listened to the representative of the king – Hegai.
Esther realized Hegai must have learned so much about the King, he must have learned what the king looks for in a woman, so she humbled herself, placed down all she knew about beauty and fashion and listened to Hegai. Who knows maybe there were times Esther would have gone against Hegai’s advice, but she was humble enough to submit her opinion and thoughts.
Before Jesus left the earth, He said: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.” (John 16:13) Then in verse 26 of chapter14, he said, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
We have not been with the father face to face, just like Esther had not related with the King before. Esther had only Hegai to teach her what the king was looking out for, we have the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not leave us clueless; He did not leave us to the mercy of our diverse cultures and traditions, he gave us the Holy Spirit, and he specifically said the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth and teach us ALL things, including how to dress.
I’ve heard people say, ‘listen to your conscience’ but while the Holy Spirit can speak to us through our conscience, our conscience is not the Holy Spirit, so don’t just listen to your conscience, yield to the leadings of the Holy Spirit. But is so sad that the place of the Holy Spirit has been relegated to the background in most churches today. Lots of Christians are being trained and equipped to listen to the voices of their pastors and follow church doctrines and traditions, but how many are being thought hoe to be in fellowship with the Holy Spirit? If we are more conscious of the Holy Spirit, there will be less division in how we interpret the scripture because the Spirit is ONE!
There is also something you need to notice, Hegai did not force Esther to obedience, he never threatened her with hell or failure or imprisonment, Esther CHOSE to obey this man she just met. Same way the Holy Spirit won’t force us to listen or obey Him… “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelations 3:20).
The essence of this post is not to bring down any church doctrine or uphold another, Nope! But this is a call to us believers to be filled with the Holy Spirit, so much that it will flow to the outside. In the Old Testament, outward holiness matters, but in this dispensation, recreation happens from within. I can say this anywhere, “No Spirit-filled lady will go out with her breast not properly covered and be comfortable”. No way! Instead of focusing on doctrines, let the focus be more on the Holy Spirit and we will all come into unity without knowing it.
