He Called The Twelve, Where Was Matthias?

Are you one of those who used or still believe Jesus had just twelve disciples following him? When we were younger, that was the norm, Jesus had just twelve disciples, and that was all.

But the scripture showed us there were more disciples and followers, for example, we read about the seventy disciples Jesus sent out to preach, we read some women followed him around and ministered to his needs, and most importantly, we read about Matthias and Joseph who is also called Barsabas, the two men who were nominated to replace Judas. One of the requirements these men had to meet can be seen in Acts 1:21
"Wherefore of these men which have companies with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us."

The verse above shows that Matthias, the man that was eventually taken to replace Judas Ischariot had been with Jesus from the beginning of Jesus's earthly ministry to the end. Matthias was there when Jesus called the twelve out of the rest of the disciples, though he looked as qualified as the chosen twelve, he had to watch as the the twelve got special treatments from Christ, but he didn't leave because he was rejected, he didn't see the time he spent with Christ as a waste of time, he waited till the end.

All the disciples were sad and discouraged when Jesus was crucified. I wondered what Matthias would have been thinking at that moment of darkness, but then, he still stayed with the rest. But then, there was a need to fulfil the scripture and replace Judas, Matthias was called to be one of the twelve.

Why did Matthias stayed all through though he was not so relevant? He had genuine love for Jesus, he believed in Jesus even when things weren't favourable. He also had the right motive, his intention can be described as pure. He was not after posts, titles, human praises and exaltation, he chose to see beyond fame and popularity. Matthias was committed, but he wasn't committed to title, splendor, or fame, he was committed to Jesus.

What will be your reaction if you are denied a post even after your toil and hard work? What are your motives for following Him? Cause of what you will get or because of what He can do for you? What are you committed to? Jesus Himself or what you can get from Him? Are you patient like Matthias? Deep down, do you believe God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him or you are ready to jump sheep and switch masters if the conditions are no longer favorable?
