Remember ‘love is wicked’? A song performed by Brick and
Lace like a decade ago? Bet you do, though it was a fast song, the lyrics of
the song, most especially the refrain is definitely not lost on us all. Sometimes
I like to imagine heartbroken people dancing to the song, agreeing with the
singers in their heart that ‘love is indeed wicked’.
But come to think of it, is love indeed wicked? Most of us
grew up with this notion that love is a two edged sword, the wicked love get
you heartbroken, the nice love gives you happiness. So what do we do, we
run, lock up, avoid any prospect of
love, at least till someone comes and sweep us off our feet, then you will
hear, ‘I didn’t want to fall in love o, but I just couldn’t help it’ or ‘you can’t
decide who you fall in love with, the heart want what the heart want’.
But is love truly a two edged sword? Nope! Love is
beautiful, or as we usually say, ‘love is a beautiful thing’, the most powerful
magic that exists. You think I am wrong? Ok, let me ask you, what is the color
of cooked rice? Green? Red? Yellow? I know you will say white too right? Normal
parboiled rice will be white. So why then do we have green rice? Or call it
fried rice. People! Processes, ingredients! Knowledge! Skills! All these and
any other you can think of turns the ‘life’ of rice around, all these determines
the color and forms rice will take.
Same as love; like rice is white, love is beautiful, so what
makes love pain in the ass? What make love hard and painful? PEOPLE! Like the
person cooking rice determines the color of the rice, so does the person you are
in love with determines if the love will be painful or joyful.
Another important factor is your knowledge, interpersonal relationship
skills, your ability to manage situations well, how much you know and
understand each other, how much you can handle pressure and many more. All
these determine how lovely or painful love will be.
The crux of the gist is, love is neither painful nor wicked,
the person you are in love with determines how it will be. Fall in love with a
serial liar, then you may define love as deceitful; when you love an inconsiderate
and selfish man who always take advantage of you and abuse your trust, can such
love be joyful?
You may have been deeply hurt and broken in the past, but
the person you dealt with broke your heart, not love. In fact, love is like
salt, it sweetens and sustains relationships. ‘Love covereth a multitude of
sins’, it gives hope in hopelessness and gives strength in times of weakness. Every
time I think about love, I can only see the beauty of it. Your past experiences
should not stop you from loving again, it should teach you to be careful of whom
you give your heart to; for his/her efforts, added to yours will determine how
you will define love.
Are you going through a moment of hurt and heart break? This
piece is dedicated to you! You gave your all and it didn’t work? Such is life,
sometimes you get knocked down even when at your best. But it is about time you
picked yourself up and get out of the mud. Time to move on and let love find
you again. You are not weak; you are strong, so remain strong!
